Freedom Readers

Freedom Readers is a literacy nonprofit dedicated to improving reading outcomes in low-income communities. Since inception in 2010, Freedom Readers ensures that every scholar has the skills, confidence, and access to become a lifelong reader. We work alongside schools, families, and community partners to close reading gaps and build home libraries.

Our comprehensive model blends in-school and community-based programming, high-interest book access, and book joy to support reading growth both academically and personally. Through our programming scholars receive reading practice, mentorship, public speaking practice, culturally responsive books, and consistent encouragement.

In 2025, Freedom Readers served 505 scholars across all programs and distributed over 6,000 books directly into the hands and homes of children. Schools like Myrtle Beach Primary engaged in multiple Freedom Readers services, including in-person programming, on-site book club through the YMCA, and participation in our Ultimate Reading Challenge—where 34 classrooms committed to a month-long reading competition that sparked measurable growth in reading stamina and enthusiasm.

What makes Freedom Readers unique is our focus on both literacy achievement and reading self-concept. We believe reading growth happens when children not only build skills, but also begin to see themselves as capable, confident readers. Our programming integrates access, accountability, joy, and data-driven performance measures to ensure meaningful outcomes.

Through strong school partnerships, intentional community collaboration, and a commitment to continuous improvement, Freedom Readers is building a scalable literacy model that strengthens families, empowers scholars, and transforms communities—one book at a time.
