Since our founding, the American Red Cross has remained committed to preventing and alleviating human suffering, guided by compassion and a focus on our most vulnerable communities. Through the generous support of the Chapin Foundation, we continue to address racial inequities in the fight against sickle cell disease by strengthening and diversifying the local blood supply. Since the launch of this Initiative, more than 1,200 first-time African American donors in the Myrtle Beach area have stepped forward to give blood, many also receiving sickle cell trait screenings, with nearly 40% learning their trait status for the first time. Over the past 3 years, this effort has supported 64,073 productive procedures for sickle cell patients in Horry County, helping ensure patients receive closely matched blood, reduce complications, and build lasting trust within the communities we serve. The Red Cross also provides blood services such as mini health assessments, cancer treatment platelet collection, and rare donor collection.
